Test patterns and tones that run right in your browser, with nothing to download. Use a computer connected to the display or speakers you want to check, open a pattern full screen, and adjust from there.
- Set your browser zoom to 100% and use your display's native resolution.
- Let the display warm up for about 30 minutes and dim the room.
- Pick the Movie or Cinema picture mode and turn off dynamic contrast, sharpening and motion smoothing.
Each channel should come only from the matching speaker, and the center image should sit exactly between the two.
In phase should sound solid and centered. Out of phase sounds thin and vague with weak bass. If the "in phase" one sounds worse, one speaker is wired backwards.
A wide, even wash of noise. Listen for rattles, buzzes and any frequency that stands out.
Listen for buzzing, rattles and loud or quiet regions. Many rooms and small speakers will not reproduce the lowest octave.
- The patterns are standard 8-bit images sent from your computer. Your operating system, graphics driver and display can change the levels, and PC and TV inputs may use different black levels (full or limited range). Treat this as a quick check, not a replacement for a calibration disc or a meter.
- Audio plays in stereo through your computer's output, so it can't test a 5.1 setup. For surround, use the test trailers in Resources.
- Turn off any audio enhancements, loudness or equalizer settings on your computer so the tones reach your speakers unchanged.
